What Are X-Rays and How Do They Work?
An X-ray is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses electromagnetic radiation to create images of the internal structures of the body. During the procedure, X-rays pass through the body and are absorbed by different tissues in varying amounts. Bones absorb more radiation than soft tissues, which allows the X-ray machine to capture clear images of the bone structure.
In foot and ankle care, X-rays are commonly used to assess bone health, detect fractures, examine joint alignment, and diagnose various conditions that affect the bones, tendons, and ligaments in the foot and ankle.

Why Are X-Rays Important for Foot and Ankle Health?
X-ray imaging is crucial for diagnosing a variety of foot and ankle conditions. By using X-rays, our podiatrists can:
- Identify Fractures: X-rays are the most effective way to diagnose bone fractures, including stress fractures and traumatic injuries.
- Detect Deformities: Conditions like bunions, flat feet, and Hammertoes can be better understood through X-ray imaging to evaluate bone alignment and joint health.
- Evaluate Joint Health: X-rays can help detect joint problems, such as arthritis, degeneration, or bone spurs.
- Assess Healing Progress: After an injury or surgery, X-rays are used to monitor the healing process and ensure bones are properly aligned and healing as expected.
- Examine Soft Tissue: While X-rays primarily focus on bones, they can also provide useful information about soft tissue conditions like tendon tears or calcifications.
X-rays help our podiatrists make more accurate diagnoses and ensure the most effective treatment for foot and ankle conditions.

Common Foot and Ankle Conditions Diagnosed with X-Rays
X-ray imaging is useful for diagnosing a wide range of foot and ankle conditions, including:
Fractures
Whether caused by trauma or repetitive stress, bone fractures in the foot or ankle can cause significant pain and swelling. X-rays help identify the location, type, and severity of the fracture, enabling our podiatrists to develop the best treatment plan.
- Common Fractures: Stress fractures, metatarsal fractures, ankle fractures, toe fractures.
Arthritis
X-rays are crucial for diagnosing arthritis in the foot and ankle, allowing us to see joint space narrowing, bone spurs, and other signs of wear and tear.
- Conditions Diagnosed: Osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and post-traumatic arthritis.
Bunions and Deformities
X-rays are essential for evaluating the severity of bunions and other foot deformities, providing insights into the alignment of bones and joints.
- Common Deformities: Bunions, Hammertoes, and flat feet.
Tendon and Ligament Injuries
Although X-rays primarily show bone structures, they can also help identify certain soft tissue issues like tendon calcifications, tears, and inflammation.
- Conditions Diagnosed: Achilles tendonitis, peroneal tendon injuries, and tendon ruptures.
Bone Spurs and Growths
X-rays can detect bone spurs or abnormal bone growths that form around joints or tendons, often contributing to pain and discomfort.
- Conditions Diagnosed: Heel spurs, bunion-related bone growths.
Foot and Ankle Alignment
X-rays help assess the alignment of the foot and ankle, ensuring bones are in proper position for optimal function.
Conditions Diagnosed: Misalignment due to fractures, flat feet, and congenital deformities

What to Expect During an X-Ray Procedure
Our in-office X-ray service is quick, painless, and performed by trained professionals to ensure the highest quality images. Here’s what you can expect during the procedure:
Pre-Procedure Preparation
You may be asked to remove shoes, socks, or any clothing that may obstruct the X-ray view. If necessary, we will provide you with a gown to wear during the procedure. You should inform the technician if you are pregnant or suspect you might be, as X-rays should be avoided during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary.
Taking the X-Ray
The process is fast and non-invasive. You will be positioned in front of the X-ray machine, and depending on the area being examined, you may need to change positions or take different views of your foot or ankle. The technician will take a few images of the area from various angles to ensure a thorough examination.
Post-Procedure Care
After the X-ray is completed, you may resume normal activities. The images will be sent to our podiatrists, who will analyze them to make an accurate diagnosis and determine the best treatment plan for your condition.
